SEO for Small Businesses: Simple Steps You Can Actually Take

· 3 min read

Feeling a bit lost when it comes to SEO? You're not alone! Many small business owners find the whole concept of Search Engine Optimisation a bit daunting, but it doesn't have to be.

What Even IS SEO, Anyway?

Think of SEO as making friends with Google (and other search engines!). When someone searches for something related to your business, SEO is about helping your website pop up higher on their results page. The higher you are, the more likely people are to click on your site, which means more potential customers for you.

It's not about tricking the system; it's about making your website as clear and helpful as possible, both for your visitors and for the search engines trying to understand what you're all about. And the good news? You don't need a huge budget or a specialist degree to make a real difference.

Keywords: The Words Your Customers Use

Keywords are the absolute cornerstone of SEO. These are the words and phrases people type into search engines when they're looking for what you offer. Identifying the right ones is like finding the secret language of your potential customers.

Start by brainstorming: what would you type if you were looking for your product or service? Don't just think about single words; long-tail keywords (longer, more specific phrases) can be incredibly effective because they often indicate higher intent. For example, instead of just 'bakery', think 'gluten-free birthday cakes Brighton' if that's what you offer.

Once you have a list, weave them naturally into your website content. This means your page titles, headings, and the text itself. Don't 'stuff' them in, as that looks spammy to both people and search engines. Focus on creating valuable content that answers questions and provides solutions using those keywords.

  1. 1.Think like your customer: What would they search for?
  2. 2.Use tools like Google's Keyword Planner (free!) for ideas and search volume.
  3. 3.Look at competitor websites: What keywords are they ranking for?
  4. 4.Include keywords in page titles, headings (H1, H2), and naturally in your body text.

Optimising Your Website's Pages (On-Page SEO)

Now that you know your keywords, it's time to put them to work on your actual website pages. This is what we call 'on-page SEO', and it's largely within your control. Every page on your website is an opportunity to tell search engines what it's about.

Your page titles (the text that appears in the browser tab) and meta descriptions (the short summary under the title in search results) are crucial. Write them clearly, include your main keyword, and make them compelling enough for someone to click. Imagine them as a mini-advert for your page! Also, make sure your images have 'alt text' – this is text that describes the image for visually impaired users and helps search engines understand what your images are showing, another great place for keywords.

  1. 1.Page Titles: Keep them descriptive and include your main keyword.
  2. 2.Meta Descriptions: Craft them like a mini-advert, enticing clicks.
  3. 3.Heading Tags (H1, H2, etc.): Use them to structure your content and include keywords.
  4. 4.Image Alt Text: Describe your images using relevant keywords.
  5. 5.Internal Linking: Link related pages on your site together (e.g., from a blog post to a service page).

Google My Business: Your Local SEO Powerhouse

If you have a physical location or serve a specific local area, setting up and optimising your Google My Business (GMB) profile is absolutely non-negotiable. It's free, it's powerful, and it puts you on the map – literally!

A well-maintained GMB profile means you can appear in the 'local pack' – those three businesses that show up at the top of local search results with a map. Make sure all your information is accurate and up-to-date: your address, phone number, opening hours, and website. Encourage customers to leave reviews, and make sure you respond to them, both good and bad. This shows Google you're an active, reputable business.

Don't forget to add photos of your business, products, and team. The more complete and engaging your profile, the better your chances of standing out when someone searches for a business like yours nearby.

  1. 1.Claim and verify your GMB listing.
  2. 2.Fill out all sections completely and accurately.
  3. 3.Upload high-quality photos.
  4. 4.Encourage customer reviews and respond to them promptly.
  5. 5.Use Google Posts to share updates, offers, and events.
